Eco Sustainable Village brief introduction

Eco Incubators in (Any Country)!

Virtually any village can be elevated to the Next Generation Eco Sustainable village by using little known simple technologies and by following step by step instructions as laid down in this Master Plan. It DOES NOT matter if; the village land is sandy, stony, Salty, Wetland, Not cultivable, have NO water resources, or not  hooked up with  any electric utility.

Fortunately the technology exists and is readily available to transform any village, most productive, economically prosperous and fully sustainable habitat on earth. Even technology exists to cultivate crops without land where there is no need for tractors to plow land at all, and the water requirement is 100 times less than the conventional methods of cultivation. These technologies are widely used by US military to feed solders in the environment where fresh produce is not available.  Since there is no plowing required year after year and the water requirements are 100 times less whereas the yield is usually 500-800% more, that makes these cutting edge technologies much more economical than the conventional methods.

Features:

Introducing fully functional, efficient, energy-independent, food-independent, self sustainable, simple, durable, non-polluting, ecologically balanced, need-oriented, multi-family, universal, eco sustainable living system naturally recycling waste products into usable commodities and built in the image of nature itself. This is the complete story of over 18 years’ research into designing the most technically advanced, mass producible, modular by choice, self-sufficient village in the world that would also maintain a 21st century lifestyle

Purpose

Our lifestyle is very dependent upon living infrastructure, buildings, trade, tools and technology. We don’t realize that most of us spend most of our life in buildings that protect us from the changing outdoor climate and give us space to live and work. For this comfort we expend a vast amount on energy and resources. In fact, the construction sector in many industrialized countries is by far the most important energy user. In this research, we have chosen (Eco human settlements modulated villages) as our focus, partly because that is where we can become productive and jump start into the 21st century. The following section details the reasoning behind this project.

The major purpose of project of over 18 years’ research is to advance the science of self-sufficiency and mass-producible self-sufficient modern villages capable of self sustaining, self sufficient, productive units in its eco environment and for the rest of the surrounding communities. We believe that an Eco villages should do more for a community than simply being a 5000 years BC community.

“This project is an attempt to concentrate 21st century technologies into a universal plan that will begin to restructure the living ways of the peoples of the world.” This statement still describes the purpose of our project. We believe these eco modules could have a world-wide influence similar to the introduction of the potter’s wheel some 6,000 years ago. This is the complete story of that plan.

Why Set This Goal?

To design and develop a mass produced modules for Eco sustainable villages that produces all the food and power for their entire community and should have the ability to produce surplus resources to share with others also.

1. Not theory but viable reality that makes sense.

Eco village concept is just not a concept anymore but a hard reality and to day in most countries many Eco villages have been established successfully. Each community has something to offer, and share their knowledge and their success stories all around the world. This is the wave of the future and we have to develop and refine it to its perfection. By applying a modular approach we may start small pilot projects and document its progress for each step that we take. Result speaks for itself as “one picture equals a thousand words” like wise a working model showing visible progress can create a big surge to duplicate that model in the surrounding communities and the process picks up its steam all across the country.

2. Worthy cause

I felt that making an Eco Village 100% self-sufficient would be a lifetime goal. I felt that a small goal would be accomplished quickly, but a massive goal would test the limits of my capabilities. I had had an interest in the area of alternative technology and a suitable background. If felt that, in the event that I didn’t accomplish the goal 100%, it would keep me occupied for the rest of my life. I remember the saying “Don’t gamble if you cannot afford to lose!” I felt and still feel that even if the project never comes to its perfection, I will have put my lifetime effort into a worthy cause.

3. Energy.

Third world countries don’t have accurate statistics for their energy consumption however in the United States; approximately 20-30% of all energy is consumed in the home. Space heating and hot water is around 14% alone. If we add food processing, clothing industries, house maintenance, and construction energy, the figure climbs to around 60%. This is the lion’s share of the entire United States energy requirement, and the United States use the lion’s share of the world’s energy. Even though Americans make up only 4.5% of the world population, they consume five times the world’s average per capita in energy. Note that there is a difference between simply making more and conserving what we have. Energy can be either conserved or generated. The total cost of conserving energy technologies is usually less expensive than energy-generating technologies. Also it is commonly believed that in order to achieve very energy-efficient buildings, it is necessary to adopt a “building as a system” approach. Eco village energy module will tap all available natural resources as hybrid alternative energy approach including wind, solar, geothermal and forces like gravity and mineral resources by using locally available resources that are eco friendly and recyclable.

4. Economic.

I have always felt that an Eco village should be more to a conventional village community. I felt that the amount of money that an average person pays for a home should be a benefit for the present and an investment for the future. It should be a home that works for you. The trend in the United States has been toward a two-income family, which was a gradual departure from the one-income family of the 1960’s and 70’s. I feel that the two-income trend can be reversed. I believe that this technology will begin to reverse that trend, so that a smaller amount of household income will be necessary to maintain a home and a family and as a community we can more economize if we pool our needs and create jobs for those services thus saving time and using the man power in a manageable way in the modules of their choice to make more money for them and let them elevate their life style. The driving force will not be any law or regulation rather pure incentive driven culture will work hard to earn more and to have security of future.

Why Eco Villages?

The trend of migration from villages to large cities are adversely affecting rural resources and creating lot of issues like traffic, pollution, crime and other social issues for the cities whereas in villages are loosing talented and skilled workers and craftsmen draining its resources and chocking agricultural base. By creating micro industries, local jobs and downscaled institutions to a level of self sufficiency can stop this trend and make country life a life full of serenity and joy for all and help us to preserve natural assets for our children.

This task can be accomplished by a modular approach to have basic modules to address every major requirement like:

bullet

      Basic Groundwork & motivational Module

bullet

      Village Food Bank Module,

bullet

      Village Water Resource Module

bullet

      Energy Production Module

bullet

      New Job Creation Module,

bullet

      Village Services Module,

bullet

      Micro Industry Module,

bullet

      Bio Diesel Production Module,

bullet

      Harvesting Technology Module,

bullet

      New Appliances Module,

bullet

      Eco Housing/Shelter Module

bullet

      Marketing module,

bullet

Corporate module etc. This will be explained in full detail in this Plan.

Options

The best strategy is to give different options to the people to choose from different modules they think will be best suited to their own environment or can be best tailored to their specific needs. Creating choices makes people more responsible rather than leaving no option and driving them by command. In the first scenario they are the caption of their own ship and in the second scenario we put someone else in the driving seat. Empowering people is the road for future progress in the 21st century.

Incentive driven project

Eco village project must be incentive driven in order to be successful. Any other attempt to regulate it by any regulatory body will upset the whole system because the regulatory bodies have directly NO vested interest in the project itself, however a franchise idea will work because a franchise would have its own vested interest in the success of their project and will maintain a consistency throughout the whole franchise system to ensure its success of their franchisees.

People’s imagination put to work

The success of the West is that they have created tools and a support structure how to use these tools and they have let the people’s imagination put to work for their own specific needs. Similarly it is important that we adopt all successful experiments that ensure our success. Giving the choices to pick the right module and tailor it according to their needs creates creative thinking and encourages pure innovation. When different groups use the same module for their own applications, they open new doors for jobs by creating multiple crossovers for their needs and can market their successful ideas to the rest of the world.

Connecting with Global Issues.

No one will ever listen to the intellectual stuff like Green house effect, Global worming, Ozone depletion, deforestation,  earthquakes, Floods, world hunger, Disease or any other issue UNLESS these issues are connected to the most current threat facing to that community. What, When, Where, Why and How are the questions that must be answered and demonstrated to show the physical impacts of global issue to their community.

Tourist Attraction as Trade.

Tourism is a great source of economy for many countries. Can we attract tourists to our respective communities? The answer lies in the fact, “what we have to offer to attractive tourists. If we see the world tourists hot spots, we will notice that people has a deep fascination to buy stories. Some villages base their very existence on selling stories of flying saucers, some sell crop circles, some on Holy sites and some on historic appreciation. Any change that may affect positively to a community may be presented as a tourist hot spot. Eco villages can attractive great rush from all around the world if properly marketed and if locals are educated on tourist interactive protocol, it will fly because it is just a new wave towards future.

Who will bell the Cat.

In this project the responsibility has been reduced by classifying the issues into their respective modules and then franchising the same to keep consistency and quality of services to its maximum. Any community based group who would like to become a franchisee will be responsible to follow the guidelines of that franchised module to keep up with updated demands and help line to deal with any kind of situation.

Population explosion.

There are more than six billion people on earth today and their growth rate is accelerating each year. This growth has resulted in huge migration trends towards their concentration points like big cities. Planned cities are not properly designed to handle huge influx of population, traffic, pollution, sanitation, health, education, energy, telecommunication and habitation resources, resulting in very poor working conditions. One the other hand massive migration trends from villages towards cities have devastated the rural infrastructure. The eco balance has been disrupted and the world is facing global worming, ozone depletion, drought disease hunger, famine and extreme poverty in most parts of the world. We need sustainable human settlements that are fully renewable in their resources to meet the challenges of our time and become self sufficient in all walks of life.

Figure1. Shows the population of the Earth in the years 1900, 1950, 1970, and 2005 (projected). We see population growing exponentially. Simply due to this population explosion, there will be more of a burden upon the Earth in order to meet everyone’s needs. (The CO2 increase closely correlates to the population growth curve.) In 1994, 88 million people were added to this planet! Globally over 800 million people suffer from malnutrition; with 7 million children under the age of five dying each year.

World Security.

There are approximately 20 wars going on at any one time around the world. I believe that because of this volatile situation, the entire Earth is at risk, especially due to the nature of the weapons that we human beings have developed. A saying goes, “We human beings have never built a weapon that we have not used against another human being.” We are the only species that kills our own members for reasons other than to obtain food, territory, the opportunity to reproduce, or to protect offspring.

Changing world policies

In 1975 the world experienced an oil shortage that was potentially severe enough to cause a departure from the status quo in the United States and now the situation has gone worse due to middle east crisis and wars in Afghanistan and Iraq and this trend has rippled the natural fabric of nature that has serious consequences for our next generations. Any such oil shortage could easily happen as a result of more and massive international political conflicts. To prevent continued dependence on oil, sustainable village technology should be developed. It is not wise to spend 30 calories in petroleum energy to produce 1 calorie of food. The ecological and political balance of the world is much more fragile than most people think, and we the humans are capable of tipping that very easily. Add to this scenario the possibility of natural disasters such as volcanic activity and earthquakes that could drastically affect world security. It has been said that the only real security for people is self-sufficiency.

Understanding Soil Issues:

It is important to understand current soil conditions and our relationship as habitants and what will happen when we change these conditions? and why we get economically independent by this change.

Desertification

I feel that if Eco villages were to proliferate over the world, it would slow the amount of pollution from our industries. It is estimated that the annual global loss to desertification is an area about the size of the Sri Lanka. Our planet is drying up and the soil quality is deteriorating. There is increased salinity in soils around the world, because once the salt is in the soil, it stays there. There is no economical way to remove the salt from soil.

Soil Compaction

Soil compaction is also a problem, because plants constantly break down organic matter. The soil particle size gets smaller, actually compacting the soil. Organic humus of unplanted soil is loose and spongy, thus resisting compaction.

Erosion

Soil erosion is a problem caused by the effects of weather upon the soil. Some people view the soil of the world as a never-ending commodity. It is, however, a finite substance, and the quality is variable. You can notice soil erosion when driving through the countryside, especially after a rain or after the soil has been plowed. The tops of the hills appear lighter in color than the valleys. The humus and the decayed plant matter are washed from the top of the hills into the valleys. Farmers typically spread fertilizer mainly on the high spots in their fields.

Soil Depletion

Of the sixteen or more elements that are essential for plant growth, only three are commonly put back (Nitrogen, Phosphorous, and Potassium or NPK). Plants that are grown on the same soil over the last 30 or more years have experienced a drop in the mineral level. This depletion can take as little as 10 years and be significant enough to cause errors in the Composition of Foods Chart first published in 1948 and updated in 1963. The soil is depleted of selenium in most parts of the country, and often only marginal levels of zinc, magnesium, calcium, and other minerals. The Earth Summit Report in 1992 said that the levels of soil-based minerals in North America have dropped 85% in the last 100 years.

World food supply.

More than half the world’s present 6 billion people live in perpetual hunger! 40,000 children starve to death each and every day. 70 million people will starve to death this year. If we were suddenly to join the less fortunate, our next meal would be a small bowl of rice and perhaps a piece of fish an inch square the day after tomorrow.

Even in the U.S. there is only about three weeks’ supply of food in supermarkets and food stores. Grain stocks have been down to 62 days of consumption. Most foods do not store well-even peanut butter, popcorn, and sunflower seeds go bad after a few years or so. Only a couple canned foods—beef stew and tuna—last 5 years or longer. The emergency preparedness/survival companies advise the optimal conditions to store food, but it is difficult to keep food very long under average conditions. Of the 160 or so nations of the entire world, 140 of these are dependent on North American grain exports. There are only four food grain exporters in the world – United States, Canada, Argentina, and Australia.

I feel that proliferation of the Eco village technology would increase the food supply by making each family a producer of food, rather than having a single American farmer produce food for some 500 people.

Need to Slow Down Climate Changes.

Effects on Plants/Animals

It is estimated that approximately 200 species of plants and animals become extinct each year, never to be seen again. It is also estimated that an approximate 4°C rise in the ocean temperature would virtually eliminate commercial fishing, because of the dependence of the fish on the lower forms of life, which cannot exist in a warmer ocean. El Nino is a good example.

Aquifer Depletion

Also, the entire world’s aquifers (underground water supplies) are being depleted rapidly. (The aquifers are also being polluted by chemical waste dumps and toxic contaminants of various kinds.) Africa is a good example of the drought conditions due to the lowering of the water table. As of 1993, Africa has experienced an almost continuous drought for seven years. Some eighty countries are experiencing water shortages enough to threaten agriculture, such as northern China, southern India, Pakistan, and Mexico. California’s water supply is also critically low.

In the Eco village system, most of the wastes and gray water are recycled for further use, so the drain upon the existing water supply would be much less.

Global Warming/Greenhouse Gasses

Global warming is another critical environmental problem. The book, Global Warming: The Greenpeace Report, by Jeremy Leggert, is a very knowledgeable book in the area of environmental problems. After reading this book, UK Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher said of it: “We have an authoritative early warning system, an agreed assessment of some 300 of the world’s leading scientists of what is happening to the world’s climate. A report of historic significance, what it predicts will affect our daily lives. This report is an extensive compilation of studies regarding the environment of the planet. The book goes on to say that many scientists agree that the emissions resulting from human activities are substantially increasing the atmospheric concentration of the greenhouse gasses. These increases will enhance the greenhouse effect, resulting in warming of the Earth’s surface. In 1990, the scientists predicted that, if greenhouse gas emissions are not sharply decreased, we might experience a 1°C to 3°C rise in global temperatures. This temperature increase is predicted to occur between the year 2030 and the turn of the next century, 2100. The author/scientists suggest(s) that we, as a species, must reduce our emissions of greenhouse gasses to about 60% of today’s concentration. Basically, we will have to cut in half our use of coal, oil, and gas to maintain the concentration of greenhouse gasses at today’s level.

Temperature Rise

The ten hottest years in recorded history have all been in the last 15 years! The 1990’s were the hottest decade on record! 1997 was the warmest year on record until 1998 shattered global temperature records! There is a decrease in the amount of snow that covers the northern hemisphere, a simultaneous decrease in Arctic Sea ice, continued melting of alpine glaciers, and a rise in sea level—all consistent with global warming. Rain has even been reported for the first time in Antarctica and an ice free patch of ocean about a mile wide has recently opened near the North Pole! Figure P-1 estimates the amount of temperature rise that will be experienced shortly after the turn of this century. We have recorded instances of global temperature changes of less than 1°C. During 1816, the average global temperature was less than 1°C below today’s average. There were frosts in June as far south as New England, and disastrous crop failures. Thus, we have some historical indication of what a slight global temperature change will bring about. I feel that many of the results of this imbalance are being felt in our climate today. I feel that our climate swings, record breaking temperatures, and unpredictable weather are all a direct result of human activities. The Midwestern heat wave of 1995 killed 669 people in Chicago. The 1996 and 1997 season of record heat spells, extreme rainfall and drought, Caribbean hurricanes, and winter storms are signals that we must act on the results of climate change. With record-high temperatures throughout the south during the summer of 1998, Disney World had to shut down its water parks because of the threat of a viral encephalitis outbreak. Global warming is creating a breeding ground for diseases.

GLOBAL TEMPERATURE CHANGES IN NEAR AND DISTANT PAST

Carbon Dioxide/Ozone

Besides temperature, carbon dioxide and ozone are also indications of climatic change. Figure shows that the carbon dioxide concentration in our atmosphere has been increasing almost linearly since 1958. Even though the rate of emissions from fossil fuels has been reduced, there is a consistent rise in CO2 concentration.

ATMOSPHERIC CO2 CONCENTRATION:

Also, the rate of ozone depletion has recently been reported to be twice the previous estimate. Figure shows how the ozone has thinned in one location. In the U.S., between a third and a half of all cancers are skin cancers. Studies show that a 1% decrease in ozone in the stratosphere produces a 2% increase in ultraviolet radiation reaching the ground. Some authors have suggested that the effect on the aquatic food chain, fish production—especially in the southern oceans, and oxygen output from the ocean could dwarf the risks to human health. The ozone hole in Antarctica doubled in size in 1995 to the size of Europe! NASA has measured 40% ozone depletion over the Arctic in Mach-April of 1987. Studies on the effects of increased UV (ultraviolet) radiation on plants have only gone as high as 25% above normal. Sensitive crops include cotton, peas, soybeans, cabbages, and many species of trees and grasses.

I believe that a proliferation of Eco villages will begin to revolutionize the environment, and slow this environmental damage.

7. Increased Health issues.

a. Malnutrition

It has been said that there is only one major disease, and that is malnutrition. Some say that all ailments and afflictions that we inherit are directly traceable to this major disease. There are also many scientific studies that deal with diet-related health problems in the U.S. To sum up, they say that heart disease has now reached epidemic proportions-claiming half of all men over forty. Cancer takes one third, and arthritis plagues 97% of all adults. 32 million Americans are overweight and a majority has defective vision and decayed teeth. Americans spend the most money on health care, yet ranks 16th in the world in life expectancy. The protein which is the building block of our bodies must be 1 gram per body pound. That means that the daily requirement of protein for a person 150 lbs must be 150 gram per day. The average intake of protein in most parts of the world is not even one third of this ratio. In an Eco friendly environment villages will be able to produce enough nutrients in their food chain to overcome this acute deficiency.

b. Spread of Old Diseases

Malaria, once thought of as a strictly tropical disease, has been reported as far north as New York, New Jersey, and Michigan. Malaria now kills 2 million people worldwide every year. More mosquito-borne tropical diseases are occurring in the northern United States. In the summer of 2000, West Nile fever, a rare and encephalitic virus that is endemic in parts of the Middle East, Asia, and Africa, was linked to the encephalitic deaths of four people in New York State. Dengue fever, hanta virus, and viral encephalitis are also more common. Since we humans violate the Eco system, therefore the balancing acts of Nature counters the equation with more adaptive virus immune to our chemical pollution. In an Eco friendly sustainable living, the villages will be better equipped to limit the scope of disease by developing strong immunity system.

c. New Ailments

History also shows an increase in the number of “new ailments” that have surfaced, such as Reyes syndrome, Lyme disease, Legionnaire’s disease, AIDS, herpes genitalis, Ebola filovirus, PDV-2, Marburg, Machupo, Lassa, swine flu, and the flesh-eating virus. Less contact with other humans would also help to lessen the danger of many infectious diseases. Eco-living will help its habitants to be close with the nature and develop strong immunity against diseases of artificial life style.

d. Nutrition-Related

Many books deal with fresh fruits, vegetables, and juices as “medicine” for the body. Studies have shown that vegetables and fruits start losing vitamins and minerals from the very moment they are picked, even though methods of cooking are used to ensure that they remain nutritious. I believe that food that is raised and eaten as close to fresh as possible is the best source of nutrition for human beings—as well as a deterrent to disease and health-related problems.

8. Moral Obligation.

We human beings are stewards of the Earth, and that it is our responsibility to give this Earth to future generations in the same or better condition than we received it. Another moral obligation we have is to help those less fortunate than ourselves. Approximately one half of the world’s 3 billion people have no fresh water to drink, and another one-third have no adequate food or housing. Some people say that the poor will be with us forever. This may be true, but I believe that the developed nations of the world need to take a leadership role in ensuring that all people’s basic needs are met. Confucius once said that “The strength of a nation is derived from the integrity of its living style.”

9. 21st Century Lifestyle.

I believe other options for self-sufficiency would require more drastic or lowering of one’s standard of living and increased labor/equipment inputs and/or a more communal style of living. Also, there would be a much increased learning/transition curve. The Eco village lifestyle would be similar to an average 21st century lifestyle.

10. Future prophecies

Most people think that many things are a threat to their survival-financial collapse, diminishing food reserves, political instability, terrorism, oil threats or new millennium requirements. There are many more reasons for setting this goal that is related to global instability such as the May 5, 2000 alignment of the planets; Hopi, Mayan, and pyramid prophesies; notable increase in hurricane activity; volcanic eruptions; solar winds and sunspot activity; and earthquakes. However, I do not dwell on the prophecies of the Bible nor other people such as Nostrodamus.

Philosophical Questions.

1. Who Would Benefit?

Eco village life style would give future generations a new choice. The only practical choice today is a dependent lifestyle. People are dependent on the rest of the world for their food source and livelihood. I feel that an additional choice of complete independence would be beneficial to human beings. If they wanted to increase their independence, they could produce more food, power, and most needs themselves. They would then need to acquire less money, as their outside needs decreased.

The nature of humans has always been to attain some form of independence. People do not choose dependence from want; they choose it because it is available and easy. For developing countries, the United States has always been the role model of the “ideal” lifestyle. I believe that another example such as the Eco village sustainable living should be offered to developing countries. The water conserving quality of these Eco friendly human settlements could be especially useful in arid climates. The elderly could be kept active to supervise low-impact harvesting and food preparation. Fixed income food budgets would be less affected by price increases.

2. Eco friendly technologies

The late Margaret Mead and others have suggested that the Earth needs more plans for communal-style independence because the entire world’s population can never afford single-family dwellings-especially third world countries. The earth’s massive population is an unnatural occurrence and should not be used as a basis for future technological planning on a broad scale.

Nature has shown through the ages that it keeps its numbers of any one species in check by many means such as starvation or disease. I also believe that people would be physically and mentally healthier if they were spaced farther apart on the Earth’s surface.  Concentration of population and keeping vast areas blank can cause disaster for both areas. Scientists have done experiments in overcrowding with rats. They found that rats develop ulcers, cancer, and more aggressive personalities when competing with other rats for limited space. I believe that spacing people out would also drastically reduce crime. Even though this text is geared to single-family dwellings in an eco village, it can be adapted to larger structures or groups by following the same technologies and proportions. I feel that the system should be developed, tested, and refined in a small application before gearing up for larger projects like multiple villages. Some additional technologies would be necessary because of the simple laws of physics and material strengths.

3. Why Hasn’t Government Tried This Before?

One answer to this question could be politics. I don’t believe countries can get together for a united effort, especially taking into account the vast complexities of this technology. Also, the energy shortage is not yet critical, so a goal of this nature is not seen as practical. Some people also feel that this type of technology is somewhat “alarmist,” because of the survivalist implications: one family excludes the entire world. Typically, successful politicians would never mention an issue unless there is benefit gained. As a result, voters are moved emotionally instead of intellectually. Many people do not consider the level of pollution and global warming critical. Pollution is a problem that goes unnoticed for many years, unless you live around a source, where its effects are more visible. Entrepreneurs are not generally given grants and developmental money like larger businesses to develop a product that may contribute to society. Also, funds for experimentation usually go to companies with products that will clearly make more money or more jobs, rather than to a project whose goal is merely to develop technology (as in pure research). It seems that governments tend to “sell” energy. They prefer to control electricity, utilities, communication, and many other services. I feel that somehow the government, as an entity, may be slightly threatened by a technology that reduces its control of the individual. Now the world is once again changing with the realities on the ground. Energy resources depletion may cause a worldwide recession and smaller country's economy will not be able to withstand the pressure. That is why a rethinking in strategy is in order and sooner the batter.

4. Why Hasn’t Private Business Tried This Before?

Businesses do not generally try a “package deal” because of their own product lines. They may deal in special products involving solar, wind, or other aspects of Earth Village technology. It is easier and more efficient for them to stick close to their specific product lines. Management of business has never had a great track record for rewarding creativity inside individual companies. It is sometimes said that employers don’t hire people that have the ability to replace them. Creativity seems to be a threat to companies, similar to a departure from normal business practices. Industry has guidelines, codes, and standard business practices by which it operates. It would be very difficult for a new company to leap into this field with a product such as an entire home and contents. Another reason is that control of many businesses is in the hands of older, established people with seniority in the company. They may have an extensive but somewhat narrow vision of their own products, and hesitate to be open to new projects. There is also a tremendous amount of research and development time involved in a project of this nature. Many companies would simply go broke if they invested the huge resources necessary to

complete a research project of this scope. Also there is a limited number of final decision-makers due to the disparity of wealth. Five percent of the people own 95% of the wealth in the U.S. And on a world basis, about 140 billionaires own 40% of the entire earth’s wealth!

5. Why Haven’t Other People Tried this Before?

First of all, it is being done on a single product approach (windmills, low flush toilets, solar cells, solar heating panels, etc.). I have seen steady increases in the amount of interest and economic support given to products that save energy or recycle. It is being done by various advanced houses in bits and pieces. (See Advanced Houses of the World by Stephen Carpenter) For example, the following technologies are being experimented on to a greater degree:

bullet

Water conservation/rainwater use by South well house in England

bullet

Non-refrigerant cooling and pier footings by the Waterloo house in Ontario

bullet

DC and battery technology by the Castricum house in the Netherlands

bullet

Hydrogen technology and storage by the German Autonomous House

bullet

Controlled scientific study by the German houses at Heidenhein and the SSSH

bullet

Water conservation and recycling by the Earth ship organizations

However, the “total approach” research and development is too costly for most individuals to undertake. I estimate that about 200 individuals around the world are working on the theory of completely self-sufficient homes and now sustainable communities are spreading all around the word in almost all countries with the exception of a few. I find that people involved in this type of research are very individualistic and fiercely independent. Given these qualities, there is little organized effort, cooperative research, or shared information between them. No bank will lend money for an experimental effort. Banks must have collateral, a clearly defined goal, and a clearly defined benefit or outcome. Even venture capitalists must see “a light at the end of the tunnel.”

6. Why Aren’t Technologists Headed in This Direction?

Technologists are primarily employed by government or by private business, because it’s about the only way they can make a living.

They are told what projects to work on, so they can’t work full-time on Earth Home-related technology. It is also much easier to accept things as they are. Trade secrets and patents also play a part in restricting technology. For example, unless you know the chemical composition of a product, it is difficult to find a cheaper and more Earth-friendly product. Patents discourage “technology-sharing” as well.

Since there is a gap in service organization at a governmental scale, we take this opportunity to be the first to offer eco sustainable modules for every country and for all kinds of geographical environments and to provide consultancy services.
